You may be confused about ordering keto sushi at your favorite restaurant if you are a sushi fan. Here are some helpful tips that will help you order low-carb sushi like an expert!

We love sushi at CIK. One of our favorite sushi dishes is a spicy tuna roll, or broiled eel. Even plant-based sushi is delicious and delicious. Low-carb sushi isn't very common, but you can request some modifications to enjoy this delicious Japanese cuisine with low-carb.

You can still enjoy your favorite sushi without guilt if you make a few changes to your regular sushi rolls.

What to Avoid when ordering keto sushi

Japanese restaurants that serve traditional sushi rolls can still make low-carb sushi rolls for those who are on a keto diet. Here are some things to watch out for:

  • Tempura fried rolls: You can either skip tempura rolls or request that they not be fried. Many sushi restaurants will fry tempura-based rolls upon request. Ask the sushi chef if you would like them not to be fried.
  • Sweet sauces - such as teriyaki sauce or eel sauce, sweet mayo or sweet chili sauce, are loaded with sugar. These sauces should be avoided. Instead, choose sauces such as spicy mayo or wasabi Mayo. Stick with regular soy sauce (or tamari), which is a gluten-free sauce.
  • Rice - Most sushi rolls are made from rice. If you are lucky enough to find a sushi place that serves cauliflower rice nearby, great! We'll talk about some options in the "how do I order keto sushi" section.

Although low-carb sushi restaurants can be difficult to find, there are some options available. We'd love for you to try them!

  • Order sushi This is the traditional way to eat Sushi. This is our favorite option for keto, and all sushi restaurants will offer sashimi. You can make a low-carb meal by simply dipping the pieces of fish in a little soy sauce and a dash of wasabi. You can increase the fat content by choosing fatty fish such as mackerel and fatty tuna. Also, salmon belly is a great choice.
  • You can order a sushi box without rice. If you see a chirashi (also known as poke bowls or sushi bowls), ask for it without rice. It will be served with lettuce, zucchini noodles or a side dish of sliced cucumber.
  • Lollipop roll - Lollipop rolls, also known as a Naruto roll or a lollipop roll, are a cucumber-wrapped roll that is inserted on a skewer. They have no rice. This wraps the cucumber tightly and makes it a great choice for low-carb diets.

  • Miso soup Most miso soups are low-carb and contain only miso paste, broth and possibly some tofu. This is the perfect way to start a sushi meal. Yum.

  • Seaweed salad and cucumber salad - Usually, it's just seaweed, vinegar, seasonings, and possibly some seasonings. This can be a great choice if the salad has no added sugar.

Remember one thing: Avoid all types of rice. White rice, sushi rice and brown rice are all too high in carbs for the keto diet. We guarantee you won't be disappointed by the keto sushi recipes we have provided.

We don't often find sushi that is low in carbs when we look at the options for sushi in our grocery store. We have seen "skinny" rolls and cucumber-wrapped sushi, but they are usually too high in carbs with rice as the main ingredient. We recommend that you skip the supermarket sushi and instead visit a sushi bar or make delicious keto sushi rolls at your home.

If you are really in a pinch and can't afford sushi from the grocery store, you can opt for nigiri. Simply remove the fish from the rice.

How to make sushi at home

You can skip the traditional rice and use a cauliflower-rice mixture. This simple recipe will teach you how to make cauliflower sushi-rice so you can make keto sushi. Traditional sushi uses vinegar rice, sugar and salt to make sushi rice. We'll do the same thing with cauliflower.

First, you will need a few tools to make keto sushi rice-less rolls.

  • Sushi bamboo mat, also known as a bamboo roller, or simply a sushi mat
  • sharp knife
  • Food processor
  • Use an airtight container to keep any leftovers

What Ingredients do you need?

  • Nori sheet or soypaper
  • rice vinegar
  • sweetener like erythritol
  • cream cheese
  • Riced cauliflower
  • soy sauce
  • Wasabi

Optional Fillings

  • Fresh fish - Make sure you choose sushi-grade fish, or just use cooked fish
  • Bean sprouts
  • cucumber
  • Thai chili, serrano

  • avocado
  • asparagus
  • Sauces: wasabi mayo and sweet chili sauce; teriyaki sauce; sesame oil or chili oils; yuzu

Basic keto-sushi recipe combinations

Once you have perfected the cauliflower sushi rice recipe, you can create keto sushi rolls using any of these optional fillings. Below are some of our favourite combinations.

  • Keto California Rolls - imitation crab meat or real crab + cream cheese + avocado + cucumber
  • Spicy rolls- spice mayo + finely minced fresh seafood + green onions
  • Simple cauliflower rice sushi + one veg or one fish

PRO TIP If you don't like the texture of tempura, try using crushed pork rinds! This is delicious mixed with spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls.

Ingredients

  • 1 head cauliflower
  • 1 tablespoon cream cheese
  • 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar-free sweetener optional
  • Pinch of sea salt

Instructions

  • Put the cauliflower in a food processor and pulse for 2 to 3 seconds until it resembles rice.
  • You can transfer the cauliflower rice to a bag of nut milk or wrap it in a kitchen towel.
  • Add the rest of the ingredients to the food processor. Pulse the mixture until it is well combined. When you press the mixture together, it should hold together slightly. You can add more cream cheese if necessary.
  • Use immediately in your favorite sushi roll.
